Lead forms vs. click-to-WhatsApp ads: which converts better in India?
Click-to-WhatsApp feels like the obvious choice for Indian businesses. In our campaigns, lead forms usually win on cost per qualified lead — here's why, and when WhatsApp still belongs in the funnel.
Every Indian business running Meta ads eventually asks the same question: should the ad send people to a lead form, or straight into a WhatsApp chat?
Click-to-WhatsApp ads are seductive. The conversation starts instantly, the sales team feels busy, and Meta reports a low "cost per conversation started". The problem is what happens next.
Where click-to-WhatsApp leaks
- Unqualified volume. A tap costs the user nothing. Many "conversations" are a single "Hi" with no name, budget or intent.
- No structured data. You get a phone number and a chat. Nothing is tagged with campaign, ad or audience unless you build that layer yourself.
- Slow response kills it. If your team replies in two hours, the lead has already messaged three competitors.
- Optimisation signal is weak. Meta optimises for conversations started, not qualified leads, so the algorithm happily finds more people who tap and vanish.
Why lead forms usually win
Instant forms with two or three qualifying questions (budget, timeline, location) filter out the casual tap. The form fill is a stronger intent signal, every submission arrives with campaign data attached, and you can send that data to your CRM and to Meta's Conversions API so the algorithm learns from qualified leads rather than raw volume.
Across the accounts we manage, cost per qualified lead from forms is consistently lower than from click-to-WhatsApp, even when cost per raw lead looks similar or higher.
WhatsApp still matters — after the form
The right sequence is form first, WhatsApp second. The moment a form is submitted, an automated WhatsApp message goes out within seconds: a thank-you, the brochure or offer, and a way to book a call. Your team follows up on a lead that is already qualified, already warm, and already tagged.
What to test
- Run both formats against the same audience and creative for two weeks.
- Judge on cost per qualified lead and cost per booked call, not cost per lead.
- Measure speed to first response for each format — it is usually the biggest single variable.
